Pathology Department

The Biochemistry Laboratory is well equipped and is in accordance keeping with the progressive outlook of the hospital. The laboratory has sophisticated state-of-the-art analyzers, Beckman Coulter Au 480 , Micro Lab  300 and Blood Gas Analyser  which have, CAP piercing continuous loading and reporting facilities.

The test menu covers over 180 different investigations ranging from the most elementary tests like glucose and electrolytes  etc.

The lab carries out stringent quality control for all tests, which are, performed either by the analysers, which is done at 3 levels twice a day or are done manually. The lab also participates in external Quality Control programmes from Randox.

Hematology offers an exhaustive menu of investigations. Routine blood counts are done by top of the line equipment such as AcT 5  Beckman Coulter 5 part Blood Cell Analyser which give multiple parameters for each blood cell in every sample within a minute. The equipments generate interpretative data, along with flags or signals for abnormalities of red cells, white cells and platelets. All such ‘flagged’ samples are reviewed by the hematologist and a descriptive report with advice is issued to the patient.

A large variety of tests for characterizing complex bleeding and thrombotic disorders are available. These include coagulation factor assays, tests for thrombophilia and platelet function tests. Reliable monitoring of oral anticoagulation is made possible with the help of high quality reagents.

In addition to routine tests like Widal, VDRL, RA, CRP, Aso Titer,D- Dimmer

Histopathology & Cytopathology

Histopathology offers services for processing of surgical specimens.

For more objective diagnosis of tumors, the Immunoperoxidase study utilizing Monoclonal Antibodies and Immunohistochemical technique is available which makes diagnosis of undifferentiated and poorly differentiated tumours easier in more than 50% cases. This is also useful for hormone receptor analysis of tumors and oncogene studies.

The cytopathology laboratory handles both gynaecological and non-gynaecological specimens sent for cytology. About half of these are gynaecological ‘PAP smears’ for early detection of cervix cancer. Fine needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is also carried out for all palpable swellings in the body as the first line of investigative workup before a surgical biopsy. Cytology of body fluids, urine and csf also done.
