What is av fistula?

An arteriovenous (AV) fistula is an irregular connection between an artery and a vein. Usually, blood flows from the arteries to tiny blood vessels (capillaries), and then on to the veins.
AV Fistula (Arteriovenous Fistula) is a surgical procedure to create a connection between an artery and a vein to enable easier access for hemodialysis treatment in patients with end-stage renal disease. MGM Hospital CBD provides advanced treatments for AV Fistula with their skilled specialists and experts in the field of nephrology and urology.

Symptoms

If you seen any of the following symptoms, contact To MGM hospital to talk with a specialist.symptoms may include:

  • Genetic conditions. Arteriovenous fistulas in the lungs (pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas) can be caused by a genetic disease that causes irregular blood vessels throughout the body, but especially in the lungs.
  • Dialysis-related surgery. People who have late-stage kidney failure may have a surgery to create an arteriovenous fistula in the forearm to make it easier to perform dialysis.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis process of av fistula at our hospital: To diagnose an arteriovenous fistula, a health care provider may use a stethoscope to listen to the blood flow in the arms and legs. The blood flow through an arteriovenous fistula makes a sound like humming. At MGM Hospital CBD, the treatment for AV Fistula is provided by skilled specialists and experts in vascular and endovascular surgery. The diagnostic procedures for AV Fistula may include:
•Physical examination
•Imaging tests
•Ultrasound
•Blood flow measurements

How is it treated?

MGM Hospital CBD provides treatment for AV fistula with their skilled specialists and experts in the field of vascular and interventional radiology. The hospital uses advanced imaging techniques

After the procedure, patients are closely monitored by a team of healthcare professionals to ensure optimal recovery and function of the AV fistula.

Vessel mapping

AV fistula creation is to evaluate your blood vessels (veins and arteries), to ensure they are healthy enough to support a fistula. The first step in the evaluation will be a physical examination of your arms performed by your vascular specialist. The next step will involve the use of non-invasive or minimally invasive tests such as ultrasound, and possibly an angiogram to determine the size and depth of your arteries and veins. These tests will determine whether or not your blood vessels are able to support an AV fistula. These tests are often referred to as “vessel mapping.” Once it has been determined that you are a candidate for an AV fistula, an appointment will be scheduled for the AV fistula creation.

Anesthesia

AV fistula, the vascular specialist will administer local anesthesia to the chosen access site. Next, your physician will make a small incision, allowing access to the selected arteries and veins. A surgical connection is made between an artery and a vein. This connection causes blood to flow from the artery into the vein, this increased blood flow through the vein results in enlargement of the vein and thickening of the vein walls. After the AV fistula has been created, it will take several weeks, in some cases a month or longer, for the fistula to mature to the point where it will be able to be used for your hemodialysis treatments.
